In January of 2008, dreading the idea of a cliche “prediction” post, I wrote a post that attempted to somewhat humorously outline seven businesses that would result from the then nascent cloud computing movement. As I look back at that post this year, IBM Laptop Battery I’m surprised to find myself thinking that most–if not all–of these should appear in one form or another in the coming year.

Here’s the list, with my updated commentary from this year in italics:

SaaS<–>Enterprise data conversion practice: All those existing enterprise apps will need to have their data migrated to that trendy new SaaS tool; and should anyone actually decide they hate their first vendor,IBM 92P1087 Battery, IBM 08K8194 Battery, IBM 08K8196 Battery, IBM 92P1102 Battery ,they’ll be spending that money again to convert to the next choice. Perhaps they’ll even get fed up and return to traditional enterprise software. Easy money.

This item was confronting the unfortunate truth that most SaaS options are built on proprietary (or “single platform”, in the case of open source) database schemas. That fact alone means that getting enterprise data out of that highly customized on-premise HR application and into the cloud will take some real technical skill, as will changing or reversing that decision. I still believe that this will be a major portion of systems integrator revenue around SaaS adoption, especially for “commodity” functions like HR and finance.

Enterprise Integration as a Service: No matter how much functionality one SaaS vendor will provide, it will never be enough. Integration will always be necessary, but where/how will it be delivered? Go for the gold with a browser based integration option. Just figure out how to do it better/cheaper/faster than force.com, Microsoft, IBM 92P1087 Battery, Google, Amazon, etc…

There have been some good attempts at moving EAI into the cloud (see Boomi), but I think this is the year that we will see enterprise class offerings from IBM, Microsoft, and others make their debut. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Amazon or Salesforce.com didn’t have something up their sleeves here. It’s just too important a platform to ignore.

SaaS meter consolidation service: Given the problem stated in number two above, who wants five or six bills where its impossible to trace the cost of a transaction across vendors? Provide a single billing service that consolidates the charges of the vendor stable and provides additional analytic capabilities to break down where costs and revenues come from. Then get ready to defend yourself against the data ownership walls put up by those same vendors (see four below).

This is probably the offering I am least sure will appear in 2010, but there are some signs that people understand the challenge. If you have an application with its front end running on Google App Engine, its business logic on Force.com, and its data analysis on Amazon Web Services, will there be a way to track the costs of that application through a single invoice? I’d like to think the telecoms have an advantage here, IBM 92P1087 Battery, IBM 08K8194 Battery, IBM 08K8196 Battery, IBM 92P1102 Battery ,but they seemingly remain blind to it.

(Cloud) Customer litigation practice: IBM 08K8194 Battery, Given the example of Scoble’s experience with Facebook, there are clearly a lot of sticky legal issues to be worked out about “who owns what.” Ride that gravy train with litigation expertise in data ownership, vendor contractual obligations and the role of code as law.

As 2008 began, Robert Scoble had his Facebook account shut down for running an automated script to harvest his social network data from that service. The uproar that followed demonstrated one of the truly sticky subjects of cloud computing: who owns and governs the data residing in a public cloud service?

Unfortunately, that question remains unanswered, leaving me to believe there are still a few landmark court cases yet to appear in U.S., EU, and worldwide courts. Of course, today I would probably add cloud malpractice litigators to the mix…

SaaS industry (or SaaS customer) data ownership rights lobbyist: Given 4 above, each industry player is going to want their voice in Congress to protect/promote their interest. Drive the next set of legislation that screws up online equality and individual rights.

You hear all the talk about Internet Business Opportunities, becoming an Entrepreneur, home based business and on and on. Honestly I had trouble spelling entrepreneur a few months ago, much less thinking I could become one! And then all the frauds that are out there, makes you want to crawl into a corner and just say forget it. So I thought I would spend a few minutes today reflecting on my own experiences in hopes that it might help someone in the same dilemma I was in just a few months ago.

Yes there are frauds out there, are more fraudulent sites than real it seems like. But those are just online, they are in our everyday walks of life also. Fact is they are everywhere, and you should use the same judgement online as you would in your daily walks of life. I know what you are saying, well in my daily encounters I can look someone in the eye while making my judgement. That is true, but how many times have you also been incorrect in that judgement? I know I have been. With the internet, you can do the same analysis as face to face, might take a bit longer though. But use those same basic principals you would use if it were a local mechanic you were considering using. The great thing about the internet, you can look into your online opportunity as well as the mechanic down the street to see what others have seen with them.

So what makes a online opportunity a “real” opportunity? Well I think it should be researched just like you were starting a local business {or brick and mortar business}. Assuming you were going to open a business, you wouldn’t just go rent the first empty building and open the next day right? you would research your customer base, whether the type of business you were considering would be successful, etc etc. Well the same applies to your online business. Research, more research. If you are considering something in the affiliate arena as I did, study, gain trust in what or whom you are following in the footsteps of. Find someone that has seen success and follow in there footsteps.

You might be thinking, I can’t do that kind of thing. Been there, done that!! I said the same things, talked myself out of trying for weeks. To give a little background, I am not a internet marketer, never been more than someone that spent a few dollars on ebay or looking up a sports or news story. I worked over 20 years in manufacturing. I was one of those people some employees called a “company man”. I was a supervisor, told I always sided with the company. You know the type, I guess I can accept those labels, now anyway. But the point is, I have no background in what I am doing now and have found it not to be a liability but a asset, as I am not hindered by the ways internet marketing was done in the past. And I would bet that would apply to whatever arena you choose to go online as well.

So why do it? Well the number one reason to me is freedom. No I didn’t wake up on day two as a millionaire and can promise you that you won’t either. And I still have to work hard establishing myself, but I work at my leisure. I’ll give you a example, just yesterday. I woke up at 5:00am, spent about 4 hours doing my thing online, spent the middle of the day with my 19 year old son, the early evening with my wife, and the last couple of hours back online in webinars. Now that may sound like a long day, and I guess it was, but I worked 6 hours yesterday, had the internet working 24 hours for me yesterday and everyday, and was able to spend 7 hours with the people I care about. I consider that a successful day in my life. So the difference is, I set the time I want to spend creating and following in the footsteps and people who are also successful, and spend time with my family when I want also.

The opportunity is there, the question is do you have the commitment and desire to be successful? The only obstacle is you, but luckily you are the sole individual that can overcome that obstacle also. I hope this helps, would be glad to answer any questions you have.

As an active network marketer, I always like to keep tabs on what’s going on in the industry. One company that has really been getting a lot of exposure lately is Send Out Cards. Now, Send Out Cards has been around for a while, but after being approached by several Send Out Cards reps over the last couple of weeks, I decided to take a closer look at what they were doing. Now, while there are seven components to the compensation plan, they can pretty much be put into two categories: Weekly upfront income for sponsoring new reps and monthly back-end residual income from your organization sending out cards. The opportunity does look very lucrative, assuming you can personally sponsor new reps into your business and teach your reps how to effectively sponsor new reps as well.

In closing, Send Out Cards is not a scam. If you do your research, it’s clear to see that Send Out Cards is a very credible and solid business opportunity. However, simply joining Send Out Cards will not guarantee you success.  All Send Out Cards provides is a distributor position and an opportunity for you to build your own business. Ultimately, your success will rely on your ability to brand yourself, market and generate more leads than you can get to. It’s critical, if you’re serious, to obtain the knowledge and skills that will allow you to personally sponsor 10-20 reps a month. Without this marketing knowledge, even though Send Out Cards is a solid business, you will struggle and be dead in the water.

As a professional network marketer, with almost a decade of experience in financial services, I often get approached by reps from World Financial Group, also known as WFG, to take a look at their opportunity. While I never joined WFG, I did take a good hard look at what they are about and how their business model works. If you’re looking into the World Financial Group business opportunity, don’t join… at least, not until you read this review. In this review, I’ll go into the background of the company, the different products they offer, their compensation plan and whether or not they provide an opportunity that someone can actually succeed at.

World Financial Group, formerly known as World Marketing Alliance (WMA), is headquartered in Duluth, Georgia and was originally founded by Hubert Humphrey in 1991. Before starting WMA, Humphrey was the #1 Producer for A.L. Williams, now known as Primerica. After Art Williams sold his company to Sandy Weill and The Travelers Group, Humphrey decided it was time to start his own company.

Today, Hubert Humphrey is no longer part of the company and WFG is now a wholly owned subsidiary of Aegon, one of the world’s largest life insurance and pension groups, and a strong provider of investment products. WFG markets various financial services, including life insurance, investments and mortgage products though a multilevel marketing model. Some of WFG’s strategic partners include some big names in the financial services arena: Western Reserve Life, Pacific Life, Allianz, TransAmerica, Nationwide, John Hancock, Hartford Life and Investment Advisors International.

Currently, the company has close to 85,000 licensed reps in it’s sales force, and is operating in the US and Canada. It’s rumored that the company recruits close to 10,000 new associates every single month, which is pretty impressive for a financial services-based direct sales company.

To join the company, there is a start-up cost of $100 ($125 in Canada) plus any licensing costs that the state in which you live charges. Give or take, it will probably total anywhere between $500-$1,000 for all your licenses, and about 20-40 hours of licensing time. Unlike other network marketing companies that allow you to make money the minute you join, WFG requires it’s reps to get licensed before they can get paid. And, while this might look like a negative point to some people, keep in mind that because you’re dealing with financial products, you must be licensed. The good thing is that you can make some pretty nice commissions, to the tune of $500-$1,000 for one sale, as soon as your able to write business.

Another aspect of WFG’s compensation plan is that while there is a licensing requirement, and it will take a little longer to train people because you’re dealing with financial products that may get complicated, you only need a handful of producers to make a good income. In fact, upon reviewing the compensation plan, it impressed me that you only need around 15-25 active producers to make $150,000-$250,000 a year. Now, obviously you will need to recruit a lot more than 25 people to get 25 producers, especially since only a few will actually get licensed, and of those who actually get licensed, only a few will produce. But still… building 25 leaders, who each get 2-3 clients a month, over the course of 2-3 years is a lot more “do-able” than building a team of 15,000-20,000 reps.

One last note, there are a ton of incentives in the compensation plan including various trips, a Mercedes Benz, a Rolex, Superbowl Rings you get for going over $100,000 a year in income and various bonuses you can earn.

With that said, you do have to be aware of all the fees you can incur for building your WFG business. Besides the licensing costs I mentioned earlier, there are costs to do other lines of business, especially if that line of business requires a state license. There’s also E&O Insurance (Malpractice insurance for financial representatives) that will run you close to $100 a month. Also, may be some fee to do business in other states, depending on what products you plan on selling in those states. If you’re serious about building a financial services organization with WFG, then don’t get too caught up with these fees. After all, if you were to start a traditional financial services firm, you would easily pay much, much more than this.

In closing, World Financial Group (WFG) is definitely not a scam. It may not be your cup of tea, but it is absolutely not a scam. If you put in the time and effort, you can actually build a very lucrative business and make a multiple six-figure income a year. However, simply joining WFG doesn’t mean you will easily succeed. All WFG provides is an opportunity for you to build your own financial business. Ultimately, your success will rely on your ability to brand yourself, market and generate more leads than you can get to. It’s extremely vital, if you’re serious, to obtain the knowledge and skills that will allow you to personally sponsor 10-20 reps a month. Without this marketing knowledge, even though World Financial Group (WFG) is a solid business, you will struggle and, most likely, be dead in the water.
